How to Write a Novel - free hints and tips on how to write a novel HomeThis is a featured page

Here are some free hints and tips on how to write a novel:

  1. First of all, know that you can do it. It's not rocket-science!
  2. Learn all you can about the craft of writing - there's a lot to it.
  3. But don't let yourself get stopped by so-called paralysis-of-analysis. You need to practise too. The best way to learn writing is by writing.
  4. So, commit to writing almost every day. Stephen King always said to journalists that he wrote every day except Christmas Day and his birthday, but since confessed that he only said that so as not to appear too sad, because in truth he writes on even those days too!
  5. Read extensively. Especially, read outside your normal genre, just for the experience and the exposure to new ideas. You never know what might strike you.
  6. Keep a notebook handy to write down ideas.
  7. And be alert for those ideas - observe the world as you go through your life. I often think writers are somehow in the world but not quite of it.
  8. Don't be intimidated by the size of the project. Word-by-word will get you there. 1000 words a day has a novel written in about three months.
  9. Write quickly - editing and rewriting is the time for polishing. Turn off the internal editor.
